GLOSSARY FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Attribute Data - another term used for categorical data

Categorical Data - used when describing objects, events or people (eg. gender)

Continuous Data - used when describing numerical values over continuous intervals (eg. fractional values)

Count Data - used when describing numerical data that can only be measurable in whole numbers (eg. number of family members in a household)

Data - observations about a person, place, object or event

Frequency - another word used for count

Mean - the average which is calculated by adding up the total of the data set and dividing by the total of numbers in the data set

Median - the middle value in a data set, identified by listing your data set in numerical order and selected the middle data entry

Numerical Data - is subdivided into two types: Continuous and Count

Range - the spread of data in your data set, calculated by subtracting your smallest data entry from your largest data entry

Standard Deviation - a measure to quantify the variation within a set of data values

Statistics - described as the science of describing, interpreting and analyzing data

Variable Data - another term used for continuous data
